If you loved the fast-paced top 40 radio of the 1960s and 70s – where DJs talked up to the vocals, acappella and “shotgun” jingles stood out, and the commercials were almost as good as the hits – you just might like “that thing with Rich Appel.”
“that thing…” is a weekly three-hour celebration of that radio, highlighting those jingles, commercials and all the hits (from the rock ’n roll 50s through the rockin’ 80s), along with features like “The Slow Dance Make-Out Song of the Week” (or “SLO-MO”), “Needles and Spins” (where listeners – and Rich – tell stories and memories attached to specific songs), “A Year in an Hour,” “The K-Tel Hour” and “The World’s Shortest Countdown.”
There have also been show-length “that thing…” specials – such as “Class Reunions” (for the classes of 1965, 1970 and 1975), the “Grammy Whammy” and the “Sound Down Super Bowl Sunday” – as well as features airing over multiple weeks, such as the countdowns of “The Top 100 Summer Hits of the 60s and 70s” and fall’s “Pumpkin 100.”
During tax deadline week in April, it’s the annual “I.R.S. (as in, ‘It Really Shoulda been a bigger hit’) 10+99,” where listeners declare their ‘really shoulda’ songs. In December, it’s the annual listener-voted “Top 77.”
There’s soundbites, drop-ins, songs attached to “this week in history” events and birthdays, and just plain silly stuff. It all happens at the Chestnut Cabaret, the bar/studio where Inga serves the drinks and Rich serves up the music. You can join the fun as it happens here on “that thing…’s” Facebook page.
“that thing with Rich Appel” currently airs LIVE Sunday nights 6-9pm Eastern on Rewound Radio, and the following weekend, on an ever-growing list of great radio stations!
